Zoran Jezdimirovic, the academic sculptor, together with several artists from Gracanica, has been working for three months on the creation of the first monument dedicated to King Milutin, in the House of Culture in Gracanica.
The monument will have been built from the funds of the Municipality of Gracanica on the initiative of Center for Peace and Tolerance.
After visiting the works, Mayor of Gracanica Branimir Stojanovic said to reporters that he was particularly pleased the monument will have been unveiled and sanctified on the day when elementary school “King Milutin” in Gracanica celebrates its jubilee, 140 years of existence.
Stojanovic said: “The monument will remain as an eternal trace of our existence and also the awareness that our roots are deep and we have to respect and appreciate them. In this way, we are also leaving our traces, cherishing the values that are more important and bigger than us. This is a venture that goes beyond the initiative of one man. This is a joint venture of all of us and without the support of Serbian Orthodox Church we would not have succeeded.”
Bishop Teodosije of Raska and Prizren expressed his pleasure about growing of such a great piece in Gracanica.
Bishop Teodosije said: “The holy King Milutin has been present in our lives through our monasteries, Gracanica and Banjska, and through many works which he left and today we are contributing something to him. In this way, he will be even more present in our church and nation.”
Sculptor Zoran Jezdimirovic pointed out that the construction of King Milutin’s monument represented a great challenge for him.
Jezdimirovic said: “It was a big inspiration for me especially as the monument of King Milutin has never existed before. The initiative started here and thus we established a studio here, obtained the material here and started with work.”
According to his words, sculptural works are almost completed after which the monument goes to the foundry and on the 13th of November this year will be unveiled and sanctified in the schoolyard of the elementary school “King Milutin” in Gracanica, when this educational institution celebrates 140 years of work.
